Missouri internet sex crimes: Ads for sex acts part of new law

Missouri law is about to change, effective August 28. Apparently, the new law states that internet sex crimes and other sex-related offenses will include advertisements that promote sex acts. Nevertheless, being accused of sex crimes and being convicted are two very different things. Often, presenting a strong defense in court significantly impacts the outcome.

The governor recently signed the legislation into law which provides that sex trafficking will now include advertising for sex. This means that all apps, websites, posters or other ads referring to prostitution or pornography will be considered criminal offenses. A conviction of sex trafficking in the state carries a possible penalty of up to 20 years behind bars.

Prosecution of crimes involving children and those where physical force was used tends to be very severe. Law enforcement agents have stated that they hope the new laws will help reduce the number of sex-related crimes committed in the state.  Whether they will be effective in preventing future offenses remains to be seen.

If a person is accused of internet sex crimes or related offenses in Missouri, every reasonable opportunity is given to present a meaningful defense in court. It is often possible to avoid incarceration, depending on the circumstances. Before answering questions or interacting with law enforcement agents or court officials, a person who stands accused has every right to request a meeting with an attorney. An experienced criminal lawyer is typically able to assess a situation and help a defendant determine how best to proceed to increase the chances of a positive outcome.
