Car accidents are an unfortunate reality of traveling by motor vehicle. Even though the majority of drivers on Missouri roads are committed to safety, even a slight miscalculation can have serious consequences. Unfortunately, a recent crash has resulted in two fatalities and an arrest following accusations of drunk driving.
The crash happened on a day in mid-May. According to reports, a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old male crossed into oncoming traffic, striking a sports utility vehicle head-on. The collision caused both vehicles to overturn.
The two occupants of the second vehicle, an 80-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman, died at the scene of the accident. The other driver was also injured and was taken into custody under suspicion of involuntary manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. He was released to allow him to seek treatment for the injuries he suffered. Formal charges are said to be pending.
The aftermath of an accident can often be chaotic. Often, someone involved in a crash — especially a fatal crash — can experience physical reactions that could potentially resemble some of the symptoms of intoxication. Despite the accusations against the man who survived this Missouri crash, it is unclear what supports police claims that the man was under the influence of alcohol. While an accident such as this is always tragic, there must be sufficient evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt to convict the man of the drunk driving and other allegations against him. Because of the potential consequences of a conviction, the man may choose to ask a criminal defense attorney to advise him throughout the process.
