MISSOURI TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN POSSESSION OF DRUGS CHARGES

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2016 | Firm News

When Missouri police make a traffic stop, one can not make any assumptions about the events that will transpire. Sometimes, after a brief discussion with a driver, an officer will allow the driver to go, with no citations or tickets issued. Other times, however, what began as a minor traffic stop results in serious criminal charges. This seems to have been the case in a recent incident on State Highway 62 where a woman was accused of possession of drugs.

The 24-year-old woman was apparently asked to identify herself when a deputy pulled her vehicle over on a recent Sunday. The officer claims that the woman gave him a false name. He also said that when he was later able to correctly identify her, he learned that there was an outstanding warrant for her arrest in connection with another incident.

Authorities claim that the woman gave the deputy permission to search her backpack. Drugs and drug paraphernalia were reportedly found inside the item. She has been charged with two Class A misdemeanors and a Class C felony.

At last report, the woman remained behind bars in a Missouri county jail. A cash bond of $5,000 was set. Those accused of possession of drugs in the state are advised to seek legal assistance as soon as possible after an arrest has been made. Law enforcement agents are obligated to follow a strict set of procedures when conducting a search and seizure or placing someone under arrest. A criminal defense attorney would be able to determine whether there was any violation of personal rights in the process and take appropriate action to enforce those rights before the court.
