STATUTORY RAPE CHARGES FILED AGAINST MISSOURI TEACHER

On Behalf of | Apr 13, 2017 | Firm News

Most teachers in Missouri are committed to protecting the overall well-being of their students. In fact, some teachers develop close relationships with their students — relationships that can sometimes be misconstrued by outsiders. Unfortunately, a teacher now faces statutory rape charges for her alleged relationship with a minor.

Reports indicate that child abuse investigators and police first began investigating the 37-year-old woman when nude photos of her were discovered on what is described as a “media device.” The photographs were brought to the attention of school officials. Three teenagers were questioned as part of the investigation.

Officials say that the woman and a 13-year-old male are believed to have had sexual intercourse at the woman’s house on a day in late March. While she is currently charged with statutory rape, police say that additional charges may be filed. It is unclear who owned the device allegedly containing the photographs.

There are many possibilities that must be explored in a case such as this, including whether the pictures could have been obtained without the woman’s knowledge — assuming that such pictures of the woman do exist. Because of the stigma associated with accusations of statutory rape, the woman’s life will likely be significantly impacted regardless of the outcome of her case. To help the Missouri woman adequately respond to the charges against her, she may seek guidance from an experienced criminal defense attorney. As in all cases, the woman is presumed innocent unless proved otherwise — a fact that many people forget, especially in cases involving accusations about a relationship between a teacher and a student.
