The relationship between family members can often become volatile, especially if there is money involved. Though these disputes may lead to anger and arguments, they rarely lead to violence. Despite this, a man in Missouri is now charged with murder in connection to the death of his cousin.

The incident that led to a fatality and subsequent arrest reportedly happened during the evening hours of a day in early June. According to reports, police discovered a 26-year-old man lying in the street, reportedly suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away.

Police say that a 27-year-old man — the alleged victim’s cousin — claimed responsibility for the incident. The weapon, a handgun, was also reportedly discovered at the scene. Police claim that the incident was related to a disagreement over a debt of $45. The man was taken into custody, charged with second-degree murder and is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Despite the reports about the incident, there are several details that are unclear. Police say that the man, now charged with murder in Missouri, ultimately confessed; however, many people who are faced with questions from law enforcement authorities may feel pressured to admit guilt, even when such an admission is untrue or may not be reflective of actual events. To prevent this, those suspected or accused of a crime have the right to an attorney from the earliest stages of an investigation to help them fully understand the ramifications of any information they may provide.
